🌍 In our Erasmus+ InterCult project, we are working on the question of the status, fields of intervention and qualifications of intercultural mediators within the European Union. They vary considerably from country to country, but what they have in common are the following strengths.
💪 Good intercultural mediation allows:
- positive integration;
- the promotion of social cohesion and inclusion;
- effective and efficient work in public services, the health sector, educational services, social and professional integration programs, etc.
- equal access to information for all residents in the territory;
- a certain independence for people new to the territory who do not speak the language- an optimization of public services, health services, etc. therefore an optimization of public funds. etc.
🔎 In the five European partner countries of the InterCult project, we see and share common concerns about the threats to the intercultural mediation sector and to the intercultural mediators themselves:
- Official recognition that is still too limited, as well as a lack of clear regulations concerning the training required to exercise this profession;
- Working conditions that are often precarious;
- Insufficient funding, coupled with a lack of political support, despite a growing demand for interpreting and intercultural mediation services;
- Increasing competition, in particular from interpreting platforms outsourced abroad, which favour quantity and low prices at the expense of quality;
- Funding opportunities that exist for interpretation, but rarely for the coordination of services; And finally, the emergence of artificial intelligence, which represents an additional challenge for the profession.
👉 In addition to the survey on intercultural mediation in Europe, the InterCult project aims to organize exchanges of practices between intercultural mediators at the European level, as well as the establishment of continuing education at the local level, by relying on a network of experts specialized in this theme.
